This week I’d like to look at communication.
If we don’t get our communication platforms right, we don’t stand a chance of being heard let alone understood. The importance of realising this is critical in today’s world.
The world has changed and in so many ways in such a short period of time; iPods, iPads, iPhones, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, so much change in fact that what was new 10 years ago is not even relevant today.
There was a time when information was only available to the privileged few in society. Today in no small way thanks to Google and the World Wide Web, information is in the hands of the masses, just at their fingertips in fact.
Closer to home, think about today’s kids, if they are like my own son at 5 years of age he goes online, opens YouTube, clicks on Playschool and has the information he wants right at his fingertips. When I was a child and wanted to know something the stock standard answer was, “Go Ask your Mother”.
To put the volume of information and how it is being communicated into a little perspective consider this;
- There are more text messages in a single day than there are people on the planet, that’s a staggering 6 billion plus SMS’s
- More than 3000 books are published each day, that’s not a week or even a year. That’s every single day we wake up!
- In fact there are more eBooks sold online through Amazon than real books are sold through stores.
- There are more than 7 million users on FaceBook in Australia, that’s 1 in 3 people directly connected into this communication platform.
- YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world; people today look for their own information and want to “look & listen” not just read it. It won’t be long and they will be able to “feel” on-line.
- The video calls that Captain Kirk used when he contacted earth from the Starship Enterprise are now commonplace, available to us all free on-line with “Skype”.
Printed material today is often out of date before it even reaches the recipient, think about those door to door encyclopaedia salesmen who used the sales pressure technique “Invest in the educations of your kids”, you don’t even hear of the Encyclopaedia Britannica any more. Some of you are probably say huh??? but it’s true, there used to be a job going from home to home knocking on doors selling encyclopaedias. Even these jobs no longer exist!
So what does this mean to us?
Simply that the world has changed and we no longer communicate in the way “we” are comfortable. Today we must communicate to people both where they are the way in which they want to receive it.
