Well not really, it all started in a real sense for me when I left the Army and my full-time employment… The day I went into business for myself.
Tomorrow though is the official launch of the Small Business Foundation.
So what is it all about?
The Small Business Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that exists because the owners of small businesses do not have the time or wherewithal to advocate and lobby Federal, State and Local Governments and their agencies to implement the many, varied and innovative ideas they have to create a prosperous society. Small Business owners are invariably busy managing their business, particularly cash flow, employees and getting their work life balance under control.
Decentralisation of decision-making in both Government and the Small Business Foundation is a critical enabler for success. At a Government level this achieves effective outcomes, as the people who best understand a problem are the ones at the coalface, and they should be empowered to come up with solutions. It also shifts large hubs of Government activity to a broader base in communities where the economic benefits are acquitted, typically through small businesses.
The Small Business Foundation has been established on this premise through ensuring that decision making is at the most informed level and people who understand the problem are involved in determining the right course of action principally but not exclusively at community summits. Instead of acting as a lobby group to get Government to act, we take the far more sensible option of acting ourselves within our community to effect real and lasting change.
There are decisions where it is entirely appropriate that they are made at a national level
Examples are areas such as Defence and Foreign Affairs, most economic problems however can and should be overcome with solutions implemented by local communities, which is why the Small Business Foundation is also decentralised in its operation.
Representing half of the Federal and State non-public service workforce and 47% of the economy, the small business community is an economic powerhouse. In Governments at all levels, small business is combined into multiple portfolio ministries and is the purview of junior ministers within cabinets. This is an incongruous position when so much of the country’s economic output is generated by small business.
Through the running of its core events; information breakfasts, community summits and the annual convention, the Small Business Foundation membership provides the ideas, implementation processes, identification of unfair or abuse of competitive advantage and influence at a political level in order to realistically achieve its objectives. A successful Small Business Foundation operating in this manner will fulfil the mission of ensuring a competitive market and realise the vision of a prosperous society.
If you can make it!
The launch will be at Inspire Cafe at 7:20am in Newstead, you can register and find out all the details here
